Nice review on the lens I own, cannot seem to take the shots I like, using a Canon XSi, shooting RAW, the 50mm 1.8 gives me such better shots I am starting to wonder on the quality of this lens or perhaps my inexpensive UV filter? Anyone have this lens that can comment?

  1. Hi Jeff, I have this lens as well as the Canon 50mm f1.8 you mentioned. These are two very different animals. Canon lens is excellent for portraits, with sharp images, excellent Bokeh and super performance in relatively low light situations (the Tamron is very small aperture in comparison, especially when zoomed and you are at f6.3). I found that the Tamron lens was "handy" because of the zoom range, but I had to be very deliberate with it in low light situations. Use of tripod decidedly improved my yield of photos I like. In bright lighting, I absolutely love the Tamron lens. It is very light weight, focuses pretty quickly, and is quite sharp when not wide open or fully zoomed (even at these extremes produce acceptable photos when I am careful with the lighting). The Vibration Reduction works very well and allows you to use this lens on the Xsi. I recently upgraded to Canon 7D and find the ability to shoot at higher ISO levels with acceptable noise has increased the utility of the lens. Hopefully, this helps, it is a good lens and you have a good camera.

Try some shots without the UV filter t see if that is the issue. I do not use a UV filter on this lens (only te lens hood for protection).

I also suggest that you look at Bryan Peterson’s books - Understanding Exposure, or his latest, Understanding Photography Field Guide: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera. Both are excellent references, easy to understand and very helpful to those of us trying to improve our skills with DSLRs.
